SECOND SACKERS!

ree

Second base is a challenging position to play. Lutheran Baseball was fortunate to have some very good players at this important position over the years. A second baseman has to cover a lot of ground to their left and right on the diamond. In addition to fielding a groundball, these players need to:

  • be able to catch pop ups into short right field and foul territory

  • get to 2B to turn a double play from 3B, SS or the pitcher

  • hold runners on who may want to attempt a steal of 3rd base

  • get to the base on pick-off attempts

  • be at the base for attempted steals

  • get out to right field to be cutoff men and relay throwers

  • cover 1B on bunt attempts

  • back up throws from the catcher to the pitcher when a runner(s) is/are on base

  • participate in rundowns
